Bushfire update

Very briefly, an update on the bushfire situation.  We are currently fine, although one of the (currently contained) fires is quite close to us.  Gembrook was on alert and high alert earlier in the week, but all has been fine.  Hard to believe that the devastation of Saturday will happen again, cos the weather conditions were just so extreme.  Not nearly so extreme now, although changes on the weekend or early next week might put us back on alert or whatever.

This week has largely been about processing the stress of our weekend close call, driving home and realising the immense impact of fires elsewhere, and realising that Gembrook was somewhat in danger.  It's stressful to have a bag packed by the door ready to go.

But the biggest sad thing was that the two people I knew who were missing were confirmed dead on Tuesday.  Mel and Penny were the younger sisters of Luke, who I went out with before Gord.  They were vivid in my memory, even though it's been a while since that time of my life...  A bit of their story is here.

Anyway, I want to ring so many friends and family who have worried about us, but I'm running out of time before we leave this weekend, so this will have to suffice for now...  Thanks heaps for your thoughts and prayers....

Love Bec

i heard gembrook was on high alert and im really glad u guys are alright. its been so surreal even in melbourne. so many people even at my school know people who have lost everything, even lives.

i bought a whole lot of lollies from coles 2day which was awesome cos i could buy them all and not feel like a fatty because all the profits were going to help people! we've had fundraisers at my school and stuff too.

i hope everything stays ok.
and i hope i can see u again soon!

Miss you guys. We're still internet-less, so we only get on quick minutes every now and then... but think of you guys way more often than our correspondence would indicate! Plus, i think our strawbale house misses you... it's so sunny and cozy on cold winter days. And for sure the dogs miss their "baby"! (I'd forgotten about this, but was browsing your blog for the baklava recipe, and saw the pics). So sad to hear about Luc's sisters... we feel slightly connected just from the "jumbuck stew" (spelling?). Hope all others are well, and that this is not kicking in pre-term labour for you. Love you all. Will write soon.

hey Bec,
so good to hear you guys are still alright. I have been pretty worried and keeping up to date. I'm so sorry about Mel and Penny. This just all seems so surreal. Miss you guys and am always thinking about you through this.
